Everything All At One Go
Ianto lets himself into the Spa as he would do on any other morning, rubbing his hands together briskly; it's gotten cold overnight. Of course, sleeping in the bed alone didn't help. He feels a pang of unutterable loss at that thought.

The place seems oddly quiet, but he figures Phedre might be in one of the back rooms, or off on the grounds somewhere, since she wouldn't have any clients this early. He walks around a bit, looking for her, needing to tell her that she won't have to take the puppies after all, at least not for awhile. She's not in any of the massage rooms, the sauna, the hot tub room, the office. He pauses a bit before opening the door that separates the spa from the actual living area of the house. That seems oddly empty and quiet, too.

He returns to the office, thinking he'll get started on the orders for what they'll need for the week, when he sees a piece of paper he hadn't noticed before, the writing not his. He stands in front of the desk and turns it around to read it. He's stunned. Phedre's gone?. He's pleased she found a way to escape from Margate, but still, he'll miss her. His amazement grows as he reads on. She wants him to move in, take care of her house, her business, while she's gone. He's flattered that she trusts him so much, but it's a big responsibility. He gives a bitter laugh. Here he had Alex had been looking for a house for weeks, and here one falls into his lap right when he doesn't need it anymore, and they wouldn't even have to pay rent. No, he tells himself. You'll still need it. Alex just needs some time. He's not gone forever.

He checks Phedre's appointment calendar, then his watch. It's half past eight right now, and she doesn't have any clients until noon. Caprica will be in around eleven; they'll need to talk about how they want to handle things, but hopefully they won't have to cancel on anybody.

He decides to use the free time to walk around the grounds, see exactly where it is he's going to be living now, what will need to be taken care of. Phedre said she's arranged for someone to care for the horses, for which he;s infinitely grateful, he has no idea what you're supposed to do with a horse.

The grounds are spacious and well-kept, and he knows how much Phedre had liked working on them. He'll do what he can with them, but he'll probably need someone to help out with that, just because it's such a big job. He takes his time looking around the cottages that are a bit farther out. Phedre had mentioned that she'd rented one of them of them out, and he's thinking of doing the same. There's been a spate of new arrivals in Margate, and it would be nice to offer them a place to stay. Plus, making a bit of extra money for her won't go amiss, he's sure.

His tour around the property complete, he heads back to the main house, wanting to get as many of the orders done as he can before Caprica gets in.

Caprica's training session with Phèdre had been... interesting, to say the least. But she was feeling ready enough to start work, although she suspects the clients may find some of her techniques unfamiliar or unorthodox compared to what they're used to. She studied Phèdre's books, of course, though unlearning what she already knows isn't that simple. As long as the clients feel better when she's done, she supposes that is the important thing.

Punctual as always, she arrives promptly at eleven in the morning, dressed in layers to accommodate the cold and to be able to roll up her shirtsleeves as needed. She steps into the Spa and heads to the offices so she can hang up her coat. She can hear the faint sounds of someone writing, and calls out, "Phèdre? Ianto?"

Ianto takes a careful inventory and placing orders for the things they'll need for the rest of the week, filling sheet after sheet with small, neat handwriting. He keeps checking his watch, waiting for Caprica to arrive.

He looks up when he hears the door open, then calls out to her when he hears his name. "I'm in the office." He pushes back the chair and stands up as she enters the room. "We need to talk."

Following the sound of his voice and the noise of the chair, she heads on into the office. There's something a little off, and she's not certain what.

"Is something wrong?"

He takes a deep breath, looking over at her. "Phedre is gone." He holds the note out for her to read.

"Gone?" Her brow furrows as she takes the note, and then her eyes go wide with surprise.

"I don't understand. I thought she wouldn't be able to leave. Are you certain she wrote this herself?"

"I don't know. She couldn't earlier, we both tried. But maybe now she just wants to explore this world for awhile, but intends to return to Margate, so she's allowed to leave? But yes, I'm sure she wrote that."

"I suppose this isn't the right time to worry about how it's possible." She draws in a deep breath and hands the note back to him. "There are appointments coming up, correct, that she would've been taking if she had stayed?"

"No, but it's definitely something I'd like to talk to her about once she gets back." He nods, and hands the appointment calendar over to her. "The first one's in about an hour. Do you think you'll be able to take it, or would you like me to reschedule?"

She flips through the appointment calendar, concentrating on that instead of worrying about Phèdre so much. She'd like to believe that the other woman will return. "I'm confident in my own abilities, but I'm not certain they'll be what the clients hope to get. If they expect it to be done a particular way, I'm not sure how well I've absorbed what Phèdre tried to teach me. Should we make any provisions for dissatisfied clients?"

"Well, confidence that you can handle the job is the most important thing. I suppose we can just go with a version of the truth, that you've just completed training and that Phedre wants to give you some experience. Offer to refund their money, or give them a discount, if they're not satisfied."

"I know I can do it well, just that some people are very particular about getting exactly what they expect, and I'm not going to be the person or the precise techniques they expect." She shrugs a little. "That sounds fair enough, and might help retain clients."

In the laundry room, the luggage is busy. He isn't exactly dancing (it's impossible for something with that many feet to actually dance), but there's a definite rhythm to his movements. The hampers are far too tall for him to reach the tops and he's solved this problem by simply tipping them over and scattering their contents on the floor. He then runs at the piles, picking up towels, face flannels and various other items by scooping them up like a bull-dozer. He can't reach the shelves either, so he puts the freshly laundered towels in neat stacks on the floor. The pretty rose lady will tell him where they all need to go.

The room smells of soap, bleach, and after a bit, of lavender. There is a very faint sound, as if wood is being sawed a long way off or perhaps a rather large hive of bees somewhere nearby.

Ianto takes a break from the paperwork, walking around the spa again, even though he knows it's empty. He's walking past the door that leads to the laundry room (something he's not looking forward to having to do, all the laundry that the spa generates) when he hears an odd noise coming from inside, a kind of stamping sound, like lots of people moving around hurriedly. He cautiously opens the door, not sure what he's going to see.

At first the only thing he notices is a huge pile of towels scattered all over the floor, and he groans. Then he notices that what he took to be some kind of chest for storing towels or blankets is moving, moving on dozens of little feet. "What the-!"

The luggage turns at the interruption, taking a moment to sort out his feet. He doesn't recognise this person. He snaps teeth like bleached beechwood at Ianto and moves slowly toward him, kicking towels out of his way.

He's never seen a creature like this, never even heard of one. The teeth look dangerous, but it's moving towards him slowly, not like it's going to attack, so he stands his ground, intensely curious.

The luggage stands his ground and 'stares' at the intruder. Where is the pretty rose lady? He considers barging past and looking for her, but maybe she wouldn't like that.

The luggage considers for a long moment. He opens his lid and inches forward just a bit.

Ianto feels uncomfortably like he's being scrutinised by the odd creature standing in front of him. Which isn't impossible, he supposes.

The...trunk, he guesses it is, or that's the equivalent in this world, opens again, and approaches slowly. He looks inside; it contains a single white rose. Well, he's certainly not going to go sticking his hands in there. It could be a trap, who knows where those teeth have disappeared to. They could be retractable.

Well, the trunk doesn't seem to be an immediate threat, so the next step is to try to communicate with it. "Do you speak English? Or understand English?"

The luggage closes his lid, frustrated. Who is this person? Is the pretty rose lady in danger? He would have thought the bird-thing would have let him know, so probably not. He tucks up his feet, considering what he should do next. There are towels in the way and the luggage scuffs them angrily aside. Ah! Maybe if he shows whoever he is what he does around here, then he'll understand. The luggage isn't too hopeful (communicating is so difficult for him) but it's worth a shot.

Turning his back, the luggage scoops up another load of towels. He turns back to the new man and opens his lid.

A fresh burst of lavender wafts into the room.

Ianto watches in amazement as the trunk scoops up some of the dirty towels off the floor, then turns to him again and opens, displaying a load of fresh laundry. "You, you do all the laundry around here? Phedre never mentioned you to me. I'm Ianto, by the way, I work for her. Well, worked for her. She's not here now."

Navarre lifts his nose to the wind again, trying to catch the scent of his friend. With a soft woof, he trots across the grounds, not keeping to the shadows-this is the spa lady's home, and she had told him he was welcome to visit. He sees no sign of her, but the footbox is here. He realizes he is a bit hungry, and it has been a couple of days since his last steak.

Reaching a hut of some sort, he follows the scent in, when a blast of flowers stings his sensitive nose, obliterating the footbox's unique smell. He whines, poking his head into the room from where it had come...and sees the footbox, cornered, lid open. A man he's only seen around Margate is between the footbox, and its only escape route.

Not very smart, he thinks, remembering how quickly the footbox had dispatched the flower shirt man. Navarre takes a step into the room.

The luggage senses Navarre's presence with relief. At last! Now maybe he can understand what's going on.

He scurries past Ianto, catching his shin with a corner and coming to an abrupt stop in front of the wolf. His toes tap anxiously, the calluses making a sound like popcorn on the cement floor of the laundry room.

The luggage jigs nervously up and down. The strange man says the pretty rose lady is gone, and he doesn't understand. And he can't make the man understand him either. A foot prods a paw with concern. What is going on?

Almost as an afterthought (he's rather upset, so it's excusable) the luggage opens up again.

Ianto turns as the trunk moves past him, wincing and drawing a sharp breath as it catches him on the leg with a sharp corner.

He's rather pleased to see Navarre, at least he's someone else he knows, although he may not be able to tell him what's going on here. But the trunk seems to know Navarre, and that's comforting, at least.

"Navarre, hello," he says, relief evident in his voice. "Do you know this trunk?"

The luggage deposits the pile of clean towels neatly with the others then turns and 'grins'. It seems as if that did the trick.

The luggage sags a bit, as if he's suddenly sad. He pokes the ground desultorily with a toe.

He plods over to Ianto and opens his lid again.

He smiles down at the trunk as it seems to somehow smile at him. "Thank you. You're a big help around here, I can tell."

He kneels down as the trunk approaches him, not entirely sure how to read it's body language, but it seems upset, without the same excitement in its movements that it had earlier. He looks inside it as it opens again. "I...I'm sorry, I don't understand." He wants to ask where the trunk is getting all of this, but he needs to be able to understand what it's telling him, first.
