An Unexpected Call
It's fully dark by the time Ianto hears the beep to let him know his phone is done charging. He goes over to collect it, preferring to keep it with him when he can. A glance at the display shows he has a message waiting for him. He hadn't heard it ring, though. Maybe while he was making coffee, or doing the washing up, or playing with Alex and Dog, before Alex took him out for a walk on the beach. They've been gone awhile now, still not back.
He enters the number for his voicemail, then the password. And then stumbles over to the couch, sitting down hard, when he hears the voice. No. No, it can't be. But it is. Same voice, as always loud and brash and full of confidence, still laughing, even after being yanked through the Rift. He listens to it over and over again, just to hear his voice, tears almost running down his face. He pinches himself, has to make sure he's not dreaming.
He sits there, dumb, for a few minutes, before dialing the numbers with shaking hands. He waits, trembling, heart in his throat, as he listens to it ring.
