Relaxing at Home
Ianto's just got back from walking Dog out on the beach. Alex is away at work, and Phedre had said he didn't need to come in today, so he had spent a good long time outside, enjoying that the weather seemed to turning towards spring a bit.

He shrugs out of his jacket as he walks in the door of flat, then heads into the kitchen to set some water out for Dog. The flat is welcoming now, even in its silence, such a change from a few weeks ago. He's so relieved that things have returned to normal between him and Alex, that he has Alex back.

He gives a small smile as he takes a seat on the couch, opening the laptop. He tries every day to hack into the Torchwood files. Still no luck, not even close, but he's not giving up yet.

Holmes climbs the stairs to Ianto and Alex's flat and raps smartly on the door.

Dog gives a bark at the knock to the door, tail wagging furiously. Ianto goes over to open it, wondering who's coming to visit him. He gives a smile when he sees who it is. "Mr. Holmes. Please, come in."

He hesitates on the door step. "I do hope I'm not disturbing you Mr Jones."

He shakes his head. "No, of course not. Please, do come in." He steps aside to let Holmes enter, trying, rather unsuccessfully, to hold Dog back with his legs.

Holmes nods. "Thank you," and enters the flat.

He smiles at Dog. "He's very enthusiastic, isn't he?"

He smiles, finally shooing Dog away; Dog goes to investigate something extremely important in the kitchen. "He really is. Sorry about that. But please, sit down. Can I get you some coffee, tea?"

"Not at all Mr Jones. He's just doing his job after all."

"Nothing, thank you." Holmes removed his hat. "I need your help Mr Jones. It has to do with computers."

He laughs. "He's not trying to be a guard dog. He's just wondering if you might feed him."

"Of course. I'll see what I can do. What exactly do you need?"

Holmes smiles again. "Alas, I don't believe I have anything in my pockets that would interest him." He amends. "Not that would be good for him to eat anyway. Still, I'm sure he's a splendid guard dog."

He glances around the room and spots Ianto's laptop. "I decided to go with the desktop version," he explains. "Miss Six was kind enough to set it up and give me some rudimentary lessons in it's use. I have found the Internet a very fascinating piece of...whatever it may be. I am especially intrigued by it's anonymity. There are things I need to purchase Mr Jones, that would certainly raise eyebrows if I did so in person. The internet is a perfect alternative for me. Unfortunately, I lack something called a 'credit card'. I was wondering if you might be able to help me procure one. Anonymously."

"Well, I appreciate you for refraining, then. I'm sure Alex does as well."

He listens as Holmes speaks. "Understandable. The easiest way would be to link one to an existing bank account. Do you have an account, Mr. Holmes? A current one?"

"Not that I'd put it past him to help himself," Holmes said smiling, nodding at his cape. He looked up. "And how is Mr Krycek?"

He makes a self-deprecating sound. "If you say so Mr Jones."

He nods. "I do, yes. In the name of Philip St John." Holmes raises an eyebrow.

"All right. And would you mind having that name on the credit card, or would you prefer to use another one?"

He nods. "It really is." His voice takes on a hint of amusement. "Although we may be rather lacking in that department." He nods, smiling more broadly. "Me too."

He nods. "All right." He sits, and pulls the laptop over in front of them. "Now, did Caprica show you how to access your bank account online?"

"You've done a far better job than some I've seen." He listens to Dog clattering in the kitchen.

Holmes frowns at the screen. "No, she did not. We just covered very basic instructions. I didn't know I could" the frown deepens," access my bank account online."

He shakes his head. "More of the new language to learn."

"You've succeeded. A dog reflects the family life. Whoever saw a frisky dog in a gloomy family, or a sad dog in a happy one?"

"It's not that's it so confusing Mr Jones, it's that there is still so much that I don't understand completely."

"I'm with Barclays. You'll need my account information." Holmes reaches for his pocketbook.

He nods. "You do have a point there."

"Yes, perhaps confusing wasn't the best word. Unknown, perhaps. I'll do what I can to help with that, though."

"Ah, good choice." He shakes his head, pushing the computer over to him. "Best if you do it, really." He gestures at the screen. "Just enter the name here, and then your account number. Then it'll ask you to choose a password, so no one else can access your account. Make sure it's something you can remember, but not too easy for anyone else to guess."

"Such observations come in very handy in my line of work."

Holmes nods. "Thank you Mr Jones. You only need to tell me once usually, but you do have to tell me."

He smiles. "It always has been."

Holmes pulls the laptop over to him and peers at the screen. He deftly types in the information, but pauses when he comes to the password field.

"I'd imagine this is fairly common Mr Jones." He glances at Ianto. "Being stuck on something so simple. I suppose using my birthday isn't recommended?"

"I would imagine so."

He nods. 'Yes, that's often the case. Difficult to know something we haven't learned yet."

He grins. "Oh, yes, I've had the same problem myself. No, don't use your birthday. Too easy to figure out."

Holmes nods, peering at the screen again and making a hmmm-ing noise>

"It's intuitive for you I'd imagine."

"Of course," he says, not quite chuckling, "I doubt if anyone would guess the year 1854." He types some more.

"There you are Mr Jones." He turns the laptop back to him. "All finished."

"By now, yes. But I had to learn it once, too."

He shakes his head, giving a small grin. "No, probably not. Still, better safe than sorry."

He looks it over; the account is all there, nice little columns of numbers running down the screen. "Good. Now I'll walk you through getting the credit card set up. But you actually do it, though. You'll learn better that way."

"Very well Mr Jones. What do I do first?"

"That's what they do. Always what you tell them." He gives a small laugh. "Just not always what you want."

He walks Holmes through the necessary steps to getting the credit card set up. "There you go. You should be able to start using it right away online, and they'll send you the actual card in the mail in a couple days."

Holmes frowns, puzzled. "I don't understand. How can what you tell it be different than what you want it to do? I mean, if you apply it logically, the two are the same."

He pays close attention, typing and clicking boxes when Ianto tells him.

"Very good Mr Jones." He nods. "I do thank you. This will make things much easier for me. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?" He prepares to rise.

The only person more logical than Holmes would be Spock. And since Spock is based (loosely) on Holmes...*rolls eyes*

"True. But computers are completely logical. They can do nothing but exactly what you tell them. And most humans, no matter how logical they are, can't have the complete cold, mechanical logic that a computer does. Or even if they can, there's always a sort of language barrier. English, or whatever other language you'd be communicating in, is very idiomatic, very figurative. It's a hard habit to break."

"You're very welcome, Mr. Holmes. Um, nothing that I can think of, except just general money management, which I'm sure you can handle. Also, there will be a record of all your account transactions online. You should check that periodically, just to make sure everything matches up with what you've actually bought. It is possible, although not likely, that someone else can gain access to your account and use it to make purchases of their own."

He nods. "I see. The computer doesn't understand slang and the like. Surely easy enough to guard against, but I shall mind what I say."

Holmes frowns. "I appreciate the warning Mr Jones. Miss Six also warned me about unscrupulous people on the Internet. It seems that no matter what the arrangement, there are people who will exploit it."

"No. It doesn't understand slang, it doesn't understand figures of speech. And it will have been programmed to to certain commands in certain ways, and only to that command in that way. Once you learn what that is, you'll be fine."

"There are always a few, Mr. Holmes. It's what keeps you in business, after all."

Holmes listens carefully, nodding. "Point taken Mr Jones. It is a different language after all. One should take pains to use it properly," he smiles. "If only for the sake of politeness."

"Another valid observation sir. Though I think this is a bit out of my line." He wave his hand at the laptop. "I shall be watchful" He stands up.

"I've taken up enough of your valuable time Mr Jones. If there's nothing else, I'll be on my way."

He nods. "And expediency. Trust me, there are few things more frustrating than trying to figure out why your computer did what you told it to, instead of what you wanted."

"Perhaps just a bit." He nods. "That's really all you can do about things like this."

He shakes his head. "Nothing else that I can think of. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Holmes has to think about this for a moment. He nods understanding. "I can see how that would be frustrating indeed."

"And there are people available to report any inconsistencies to? I recall there was a help link?"

"I don't believe so. Thank you again Mr Jones. I would like, however, to be able to call upon you should I encounter another obstacle. Would that be all right with you?"
